Last night the Republican presidential candidates gathered for another debate in Boulder, Colorado, to discuss key issues facing the American people. CNBC anchors asked a series of questions directed at the remaining candidates, including Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, John Kasich, Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz and Chris Christie, who went head to head to offer their take on what viewers really care about.
However, most of the top moments were around questions that both the audience and the candidates felt took the conversation away from key issues. The top moment of the night was when Carson was asked about his involvement with Mannatech, a nutritional supplement company – to which he replied, “That is total propaganda.”
Here are the top five moments that viewers tuned into, brought to you by TiVo® Research – enjoy!
#5 – Cruz: “Famous Colorado brownies”
8:53 p.m.: Quintanilla referenced an earlier joke about Cruz not being a guy you’d “want to get a beer with” when giving the senator 30 more seconds to speak. Cruz expressed his gratitude for the time, saying “Then I’ll buy you a tequila…or even some famous Colorado brownies.”
#4 – Kasich: “America is great from the bottom up.”
10:20 p.m.: In his closing remarks, Kasich repeated the answer he gave to a student who, at a Morning Joe town hall, asked him, “Can I still be idealistic?” His answer: “Absolutely. You can still change the world. And you know the old inscription–‘If you save one life, you’ve changed the world.’ Folks, we have a problem here with the leadership in Washington, but I’ll tell you another problem: We need to rebuild our families. We need to have stronger families. We need to know who our neighbors are. We need to come together as a country because we have to realize that America is great — not from the top down. Oh, yeah, we want to elect a good President, but America is great from the bottom up. And the bottom up is us — in our families, in our communities, in our neighborhoods. We will renew American if we work together, and I am totally confident that we will. And God bless America.”
#3 – Christie: “Even in New Jersey what you’re doing is called rude.”
9:57 p.m.: After being interrupted several times during Christie’s answer to a question about climate change, Christie chastised the moderator, saying, “Even in New Jersey what you’re doing is called rude.” The audience met Christie’s comment with laughter before Christie touted New Jersey’s standing as the country’s number three producer of solar energy.
#2 – Huckabee: “I’m wearing a Trump tie tonight.”
9:48 p.m.: When Huckabee was asked if Trump had the “moral authority to unite the country,” the question was met by boos from the audience. Huckabee quickly leapt to Trump’s defense calling the mogul “a good man,” and asserting, “I’m wearing a Trump tie tonight. Get over that one, ok?”
#1 – Carson: “That is total propaganda”
9:17 p.m.: When asked about his involvement with nutritional supplement company, Mannatech, Carson replied, “Well, that’s easy to answer. I didn’t have an involvement with them. That is total propaganda, and this is what happens in our society. Total propaganda. I did a couple of speeches for them, I do speeches for other people. They were paid speeches. It is absolutely absurd to say that I had any kind of a relationship with them. Do I take the product? Yes. I think it’s a good product.” When it was pointed out that Carson’s image appeared on the Mannatech website, Carson stated, “If somebody put me on their homepage, they did it without my permission.”
