Lately it seems that every time I turn on the TV, I’m treated to a new, odd version of Rob Lowe. So far I’ve seen Scrawny Arms Rob Lowe, Crazy Hair Rob Lowe, and Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe. The commercials are cute, but as a life-long fan of the Brat Pack, I know there’s much more Lowe to know.
Lowe’s first film role was as Sodapop Curtis in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders. His costars included Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, and Lowe’s childhood friend, Emilio Estevez. Lowe and Estevez also share the distinction of being members of the Brat Pack. Coined by journalist David Blum in a 1985 article, the nickname refers to a group of young actors who appeared in either The Breakfast Club or St. Elmo’s Fire, and who continued to star together in other coming-of-age films.
In recent years, Lowe has penned two autobiographies: Stories I Only Tell My Friends and Love Life. As one would expect, Lowe has a treasure chest of anecdotes involving other celebrities, including the time a young Janet Jackson declared she was forsaking acting to pursue a music career, or that Charlie Sheen sometimes wore a bulletproof vest to school. And providing confirmation that even the rich and famous have bad days, Lowe describes experiencing “a full shame spiral involving Barbra Streisand and the President of the United States”—but really, who hasn’t?
With a career spanning over thirty years, Lowe has played everything from a sleazy program director (Wayne’s World), to Jesse James (Frank and Jesse), to John F. Kennedy (Killing Kennedy).
