It’s been about two weeks since Netflix starting streaming every episode of Friends, and about two minutes since I’ve watched an episode of Friends. All this Friends watching has convinced me of two things. One, I really have no excuse for not starting on those New Year’s resolutions, and two, my own friends could really bring more to the table. Don’t get me wrong, I love my friends, they’re great—but none of them are giving me free samples from Ralph Lauren, and not one of them has locked themselves in a box to prove their loyalty…so really what’s the point?
Now I realize that basing one’s ideas about friendship on a single show is absurd, but basing them on three shows is practically scientific. So when also considering the friendships on Marry Me and Broad City, I can’t help but think that my friends aren’t giving it their all. For instance, why do they speak at such a normal pace? On Marry Me, Casey Wilson and Tymberlee Hill talk at least double-time, and I’m pretty sure that makes everything they say twice as funny. And on Broad City, when Ilana wants to earn extra money to see a Lil Wayne concert, Abbi is right by her side cleaning some creepy guy’s apartment in her underwear. Now, I’m not necessarily looking for that kind of adventure, but I do admire Abbi’s dedication.
