I’m all caught up or finished with Breaking Bad, Doctor Who, and The Bridge…what do you have for me to watch now? @patela32221 on Twitter
Unfortunately, while you may never see more of Walter White (unless he shows up on the Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul, premiering next February), you’re definitely in for more Doctor Who, starting this Saturday night at 8pm on BBCA. But you’re still going to need something to watch during that long week between new episodes. If you’re looking for a dark detective with a British accent, try Luther. Luther stars Idris Elba (whom you might know from The Wire, The Office or the two Thor movies, or from just being awesome) as a near genius detective with a few vices of his own. With three seasons available on Netflix, Amazon on Demand, and Hulu, you’ll have plenty to watch between new episodes of Doctor Who. You might also try Broadchurch, starring the Tenth Doctor himself, David Tennant (which he’ll sort of reprise in FOX’s remake Gracepoint, premiering October 2nd).
Since watching Blackfish, I’ve been obsessed with documentaries! What else can I watch to scratch my non-fiction itch? – Katharine T., Blacksburg, VA
There’s nothing better than spending a Sunday afternoon getting engrossed in a great documentary, and while Blackfish captivated the fascination of lots of us in the last year, there are still a bunch of other great documentaries out there you might not have heard of. For something light, try The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, the story of a high school teacher trying to break the all-time scoring record for “Donkey Kong”, while the current champion acts like a jerk and makes hot sauce. For something much more somber, watch 2008’s Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. We won’t say too much about it, other than recommending you grab a box of tissues and a blanket to cover your head before you sit down to watch.
Netflix announced new stand-up specials for the rest of 2014, but I don’t want to wait. What good stand-up can I watch right now? – Greg H., Clearwater, FL
You’re right. Netflix’s slate of stand-up for the rest of the year is full of high profile names, such as Jim Jefferies, Chelsea Handler and even Bill Cosby. However, there are plenty of great sets you can watch without having to wait for those to be released. Want to know how Def Jam comics should have taken down Home Alone 2: Lost in New York? Check out John Mulaney: New In Town. Like jokes about whales with body image issues? Jim Gaffigan Mr. Universe is for you. Want something a bit edgier than your standard Tonight Show comics? Go for the trifecta of Louie C.K. Live at the Beacon Theater, Bill Burr: You People Are All The Same, and Jim Norton: American Degenerate, to cringe your way right off the couch.
