TiVo Olympic Coverage – Top Moments – February 11, 2014

Last night’s Top Moments were all about the pipe—the Men’s Snowboard Halfpipe competition, that is. The highly-anticipated event ended in disappointment for Team USA’s Shaun White: After foregoing his spot in the Snowboard Men’s Slopestyle in order to focus on the quest of a Gold hat trick in the Snowboard Men’s Halfpipe, White suffered a disappointing loss to Russian-born Iouri Podladtchikov, a/k/a/ “I-Pod.” White had scored a 95.75 with a fabulous second qualifying run, but in the finals he struggled on a slushy halfpipe, ultimately yielding Gold to I-Pod and any podium placement to two Japanese snowboarders, 15-year-old Ayumu Hirano (Silver) and Taku Hiraoka (Bronze).

The  #1 most-reviewed Top Moment of last night’s NBC primetime Olympics coverage showed White at the top of his game: His first qualifying run started strong and ended clean, earning him a 95.75 (ultimately the highest of any qualifying run) and sending him to the finals.

Top Moment #2 shows Shaun White’s first run in the Snowboard Men’s Halfpipe Finals coming to a crashing halt. White lost momentum and balance on his previous trick, a YOLO flip 1440 double cork, and failed to get enough speed up to take another clean hit. Instead, his board lands squarely on the top edge of the pipe, ending his run with a score of only 35 points and leaving his second and final run as the only possible path to victory.

Top Moment #3 shows White, a gentleman even in defeat, congratulating Podladtchikov, the new champion. Staring at the scoreboard, White saw his 90.25—less than the 92.26 he needed to take even the Bronze—and headed over to shake hands with the victor.

The #4 Top Moment was another happy one for Team USA. In his Olympic debut, Danny Davis finishes his final hit and completes his first run in the Men’s Snowboard Halfpipe Qualification, scoring 92.00 and heading to the finals.

Rounding out last night’s Top Moments at #5 was another disappointing moment for White: In his second run in the Men’s Snowboard Halfpipe Qualification, which began with a huge first hit and a solid double McTwist 1260 (the move that won him the Gold in Vancouver), he wound up with a stalled landing in the slushy trough of the pipe. It forced him to bail on his final hit, ending in a score of just 70.75. Fortunately, his 95.75 first run had already qualified him for the finals.

Elsewhere in yesterday’s competition, Team USA scored a record-breaking victory: New Yorker Erin Hamlin took Bronze in the Women’s Singles Luge. But her run, shown at the end of last night’s telecast, failed to make last night’s 5 Top Moments.
