TiVo Olympic Coverage – Top Moments – February 8, 2014

Snowboarders and skaters dominated the first full night of NBC’s primetime coverage of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games from Sochi, Russia.

Women’s Figure Skating stuck the #1 and #2 landings among last night’s five Top Moments. The winning Top 5 Moment was American Ashley Wagner looking up at the scoreboard showing her in first place after a fabulous performance in the short program of the team event. Though Wagner placed only fourth in the U.S. Championships in Boston a month ago, she made the three-person Olympic team based on her two national championships and strong international performance. Skating to Pink Floyd’s “Shine on Your Crazy Diamond,” Wagner’s performance scored 63.10, putting her into first place individually, keeping the U.S. in contention for a Bronze medal, and providing the redemption she so badly desired

Taking the #2 Top Moment spot—and knocking Wagner out of the top position in the Games —was the beginning of a truly amazing spin by Russia’s Yulia Lipnitskaya that ended in a vertical spinning split with one leg on the ice and the other held vertically over her head. Twenty-six days older than the Olympics minimum age of 15, Lipnitskaya follows Wagner in the short program, eclipsing her score by almost ten points and moving into first place with a 72.90 score.

Rounding out last nights Top 5 Olympic Moments was a new entrant into the games: the Men’s Slopestyle competition, which dominated the first two hours of TV coverage. Team USA’s Sage Kotsenburg flipped and twisted his way to the Gold, beating out Stalle Sandbech of Norway, who took Silver, and Mark McMorris of Canada, who took Bronze.  The #3 Top Moment featured Max Parrot of Canada, celebrating with Kotsenburg after he finished his final run, temporarily moving him into second place in the competition.

Sage also scored a double-Top Moment victory in addition to his Gold: Placing #4 was his second and final run, with viewers enjoying the free spirit as he turned the event into his own personal playground. Kotsenburg’s first run in the competition nailed the #5 Top Moment spot as he thrilled the crowd with his inimitable style and earned a 93.50, moving him into first place.
