On Monday, Beyoncé may or may not have performed the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration ceremony. It’s become something of a scandal…but it also got us thinking: Hasn’t lip syncing been a part of pop culture since Ferris Bueller tried to get the entire city of Chicago to “Twist and Shout” during the Von Steuben Day parade? In fact, there’s a long history of lip syncing in movies and we’ve highlighted a bunch in our “It’s Not Just Beyoncé” collection.
Like Ferris, some of them are just good, clean fun. Remember Duckie channeling his inner Otis in Pretty in Pink or Clair, Cliff and the Cosby kids reminding their grandparents just how cool Ray Charles could be? Everybody remembers Wayne and Garth headbanging their way through Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Tom Cruise sliding across the floor in his tighty whities to “Old Time Rock & Roll”. Lip syncing (like it’s cousin “Air Guitaring”) is a way for us to feel like we are our favorite musicians…even if we are just the nerdy kid trying to impress Molly Ringwald.
Sometimes though, lip syncing on film has been used as a way to subvert our perceived expectations about a song. Take Mr. Pink dancing and syncing to “Stuck in the Middle With You” In Resevoir Dogs. Could there be a creepier use of a staple from the sounds of the 70’s than that? There’s also Dean Stockwell’s Ben lip syncing to Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams” in Blue Velvet which is guaranteed to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Two happy songs, forever creeped out by two epic lip syncs.
But one classic lip sync stands above the rest as the one that should truly outrage the nation. In 1964, Audrey Hepburn appeared in the movie version of the musical My Fair Lady…and didn’t sing a word of it. Now that’s a lip sync scandal!
At the end of the day, whether she sang it live or recorded it the night before, one thing is clear: Beyoncé can sing and now we’re even more excited for the Super Bowl halftime show.
