The world will be watching as the Games of the XXX Olympiad – more commonly known as the 2012 Summer Olympic Games or just “London 2012” – officially begin with the Opening Ceremony celebration tonight. The “Isles of Wonder” ceremony, as envisioned by Artistic Director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire), will showcase the traditional pageantry and protocol of any opening ceremony, including the parade of nations introducing the athletes of the games. But, London 2012 isn’t all pomp and circumstance so be on the lookout for a performance by Sir Paul McCartney, a slew of barnyard animals and perhaps – as rumor has it – an epic battle between Mary Poppins and Harry Potter’s Voldemort.
The revelry culminates in the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron to officially open the games, but who will be the lucky honoree to ignite the flame in London’s Olympic Stadium? Popular guesses include Prince William, the Queen herself, Steve Redgrave (Great Britain’s most decorated summer Olympian) or David Beckham, a native son who played an integral role in bringing the Olympics back to London, but won’t be competing for his country this year. Who will it be? Tune in or TiVo to find out!
Looking ahead, we’ll be keeping our eyes on the pool during these games to see if Michael Phelps will swim into retirement still on top, or if Ryan Lochte can overthrow the king. But we’ll definitely TiVo:
– Beach Volleyball: Will Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings take home their 3rd consecutive Olympic gold medal?
– Football (Soccer): Will the US Women’s team bring home gold for the 4th time? And will they have to best Japan in a World Cup rematch to do it?
– Gymnastics: Will 2011 all-around world champion Jordyn Wieber lead the women’s team to victory?
– Swimming (Women’s): Will Missy “female Phelps” Franklin become the first American female athlete to win seven medals at one Olympiad?
– Basketball: Will USA be focused enough on London 2012 to take home the gold or are they too worried about besting the 1992 Olympic Dream Team?
