Still NBC’s Most-Watched Comedy, ‘The Office’ Faces Big Shakeup

Turnover is high at The Office these days. We got news this week that James Spader would be leaving the show after one season, which, really? Is not all that surprising. Spader’s role was initially supposed to be one episode, and while it’s been great fun having him around Scranton (if a little baffling why the CEO would hang around such a small branch), he’s not exactly a  sit-com guy, is he? And now, on the heels of this announcement, it seems the fate of some of our other favorite co-workers is also up in the air.

While there is no mention of it on either of their popular Twitter feeds, @rainnwilson and @mindykaling are apparently questioning their futures with the show, with Kaling pursuing a pilot over at Fox and Wilson actually considering a Dwight Schrute spinoff with NBC (Would you watch that? We assume it would involve a lot of beets!). And we think that is almost less surprising than the fact that Ed Helms, John Krasinski, and Jenna Fisher are all in talks to renew. Don’t get us wrong, we love Andy, the Tuna, and Pam, our moral center of the show. But this show is nine years old and there is talk everywhere of Office burnout. It’s on its way out, right?

Interestingly, The Office is still considered a big hit for the fourth-place peacock. Though viewership has dropped some, it continues to be the highest-rated comedy on the network. On our end, the show is number nine on TiVo’s season pass list, and even though it has fallen a few rungs in our time-shifted program rankings, (it was number 6 last year) the Office is holding its own at number 15. In short, people are clearly still watching.

But maybe it’s just out of a sense of loyalty? @voraciousfilmgo “Just now catching up with last week’s OFFICE on the TiVo. It’s a pretty low priority these days.” What do you think? Are you still watching, or did you check out after Steve Carell’s exit? We find that we can’t stop watching, no matter what happens. We’ll admit it! We get really invested in our television characters! Do you?
