Even though Madonna promised it wouldn’t happen, some are calling it the Janet Jackson moment of Super Bowl 2012. You know what we’re talking about – singer M.I.A.’s extended middle finger, smack in the middle of Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime performance. During a cameo in the performance of Madge’s new song, “Give Me All Your Luvin,” M.I.A. quite clearly flipped the bird.
Unsurprisingly, the “spontaneous gesture” drew immediate attention and comparisons to Janet Jackson’s now-infamous “wardrobe malfunction” from eight years ago, with both NBC and the NFL apologizing for the display, but with the NFL hugely disappointed and going so far as to call the gesture “obscene.”
M.I.A.’s moment on stage did not make TiVo’s initial Super Bowl top moments, but after tremendous media attention we dug back into the data to see if TiVo users would go back to check it out for themselves a second time. Sure enough, since the initial airing, the moment’s viewership had already increased four times more than the rest of the game’s. Ultimately, it was by far the most watched part of the half time show, followed by Madonna‘s slip. Did you catch that one?
Tom Brady’s final Hail Mary attempt was still the most watched Super Bowl moment, but if TiVo subscribers continue to go back to the M.I.A. incident at this rate Brady might just get beat out by Manning and Madonna.
What do you think? Did you even know it happened? Or better, did you go back to your TiVo(R) DVR to check it out? Tell us in the comments!
