Something’s happening out there in TV land right now. Can you hear it? It’s buzz. About NBC. And it’s positive. It’s been a long time coming for the struggling network, but it’s possible that the tide might be turning in their favor. Between Sunday’s record-breaking Super Bowl viewership, the strong reception for Smash, and their rousing, all-hands-on-deck Super Bowl ad, things are certainly looking up for the peacock.
But we haven’t even gotten to the best part. Nestled in there among all that NBC goodness is the also-record-breaking season 2 premiere of The Voice. NBC’s singing competition show brought in 37.6 million total viewers and a 16.3 rating in the 18 – 49 demo. They were the highest ratings for a non-sports show on any network in six years! They beat the post-Super Bowl episode of Glee by 47 percent! And Twitter is blowing up with talk of peoples’ preference for The Voice over American Idol! The world is topsy-turvy!
American Idol may be ranked number three on TiVo’s Most Watched list, and its numbers may still far outstrip those of The Voice, but it would seem that the latter is gaining ground, and big-time. This year, season two of The Voice premiered at number 105 on TiVo’s season pass list, up from 393 for season one. And looking at our time-shift data, the show was ranked 3rd after the Super Bowl and Post Game Show this past Sunday. But most important of all, The Voice might hold even more weight than its Fox competitor, if only because it could play a major part in NBC’s eventual comeback. Numbers aside, that’s worth its weight in gold.
From our Twitter feeds, we can tell you that people are setting their TiVos to record The Voice in large numbers. Are you watching? Do you find yourself watching more NBC these days? Could they be close to turning this ship around?
