Lilyhammer: Netflix’s Original Start to the New Year

Netflix is taking the spirit of the New Year to heart, making a bold move with the just-announced February premiere of its first original series, Lilyhammer. Starring E Street Band and Sopranos vet Steve Van Zandt (Hey Silvio!), the series is about a mobster (what else?) in the witness protection program who asks to be relocated to Norway for the fresh air and beautiful girls, only to be (we imagine) sorely disappointed. And freezing.

In a move that says “we know you,” Netflix is going all in, offering its customers all eight episodes of the series at once. As we can attest, Netflix users definitely prefer to watch their TV in marathons rather than once a week, and the company is more than happy to oblige. It also seems that Americans prefer watching movies and TV via a streaming service like Netflix than on DVD or Blu-ray. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter said today that Netflix is the 15th Most-Watched TV ‘Network” in the United States!

This is the first of several series to which Netflix now has exclusivity, including the original political drama House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, as well as…wait for it…new episodes of Arrested Development in early 2013! Cue collective screams of joy in the TiVoverse – Lucille Bluth is one of TiVo’s Top 20 Moms of All Time!

It will be really interesting to see how Netflix, currently all things to all people, fares with more specialized content. Perhaps TiVo user @AmandaRykoff says it best? “Netflix Instant through your TiVo DVR really is a miracle. #ilovethefuture

We do too, Amanda. We do too.
