Who knew? As the man himself gets on in years, his namesake New Year’s Eve special, now 40 years in, gets increasingly popular. Always a favorite with TiVo viewers, this year’s broadcast gave ABC its best end-of-the-year prime-time ratings since 2000. And while the scene on TV was merry, the competition was brutal: ABC demolished pretty much everyone else. To give you an idea of the carnage, Ryan Seacrest had about 13 million viewers during the 10pm hour of the broadcast, compared to NBC’s 3 million. And our numbers show that at 11:30pm, TiVo viewers gave ABC a 124.9 percent advantage over NBC. Ouch. Carson Daly? He’s not happy. Also unhappy? Fox. Their disadvantage was a stunning 608 percent.
But no matter where you watched, you likely caught Lady Gaga kissing Mayor Michael Bloomberg full on the mouth at midnight, which was…well, it was a sight. And for our TiVo viewers, it was quite a sight, one that warranted some re-watching. It didn’t pull in Jackson/Timberlake numbers, but there were more than a few rewinds happening on TiVo DVRs all over the country that night.
As other event television struggles to bring in the numbers (Oscars, Emmys, etc), the ratings “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’Eve” have actually risen for the last three years in a row. Is it Seacrest? As heir apparent to the Dick Clark legacy, is it maybe time to just give him the crown? The man is everywhere, something to aspire to, maybe, as we all ring in the New Year.
Then again, it could have just been Gaga.
