‘Timewaster!” That’s the first thing that lots of people think of when they hear YouTube. But halt, fair TiVo® service viewers. For YouTube is much more than a repository for videos of sneezing baby pandas and sleep running dogs. YouTube has democratized online video, allowing absolutely everyone to create and share videos of all kinds. It’s a world-wide phenomenon that’s led to an explosion of video creativity…and yes, lots of videos of people’s cats.
But if you dig a little, you can find some entertainment gems. And via the magic of the “Related Videos” links that pop up at the end of every YouTube clip, you can stumble on even more fun, which lead to more and more videos and more and more fun. After spending a few hours (ok, weeks) clicking further and further into the YouTube vortex, here are a few of our favorites:
- Holy, Holy, Holy – Batman: Remember the old Batman television show from the 60’s? Well, the folks on YouTube do. In this YouTube classic, you can watch every one of Robin’s “Holy (Something), Batman!” exclamations one after the other. Holy Hilarious, Batman!
- Soul Toons Ep. III: In this great example of artists using YouTube to showcase their talent, YouTube user DeStorm shows off his voice (and his editing skills) with his “Soul Toons” series. Each episode contains DeStorm recreating classic cartoon and sitcom theme songs by singing all the parts and editing them together “Parent Trap” style. Perfect Strangers has never sounded so soulful.
- Perfect Strangers – Seattle: Speaking of Balki and Cousin Larry, these YouTubers recreated the entire opening of the classic sitcom, shot for shot, in their hometown of Seattle. The result is a hilarious re-make and a love letter to the city of Seattle. (Yes, the first time we saw it, we had to stop and do the dance of joy)
- Jessie’s Song Digital Remix: YouTube is also the home of thousands and thousands of remixes of all your favorites…and one of our favorites “Saved by the Bell”. In this video, based on the classic “very special” episode dealing with Jessie’s caffeine pill addiction, we’re treated to a remixed song, some rappin’ dance moves and an odd Principal Belding/Screech combo.
- Centraal Station Antwerpen gaat uit zijn dak!: We won’t spoil this one for you, but trust us, it’s well worth the search to find your way back to do.
These are just a few examples of the millions and millions of videos just waiting for you on YouTube. Everything is out there just waiting for you to search and find it, all from the comfort of your couch. Want the moon? You can even have that too.
