It’s already halfway through the summer and you’re hopefully making your way through the summer reading list *wink wink*. Once you’re done reading that time old classic, stream or download the movie!
You might find that sometimes the book is not better than the movie. With rentals and subscriptions from Netflix, Blockbuster and Amazon Prime Video, stream or download summer reading classics now on your broadband-connected TiVo® box.
The Outsiders: This teen drama in rural Oklahoma features nearly every big name of 1980s cinema — including Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio and Patrick Swayze. In this faithful adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel, the hardscrabble “Greasers” face off against the affluent “Socs.”
Pride & Prejudice: Need an even shorter recap? Set in 19th-century England, Mrs. Bennet (Brenda Blethyn) is all atwitter in hopes of marrying her daughters to prosperous gentlemen callers, especially when a wealthy bachelor moves nearby. Headstrong daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) meets her match in Mr. Darcy, but misinterprets Darcy’s honorable intentions and jeopardizes her chance at love.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest: While serving time for insanity at a state mental hospital, implacable rabble-rouser Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) inspires his fellow patients to rebel against the authoritarian rule of head nurse Mildred Ratched.
To Kill a Mockingbird: Southern comforts abound in this big-screen adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel as lawyer Atticus Finch defends an innocent black man against rape charges but ends up in a maelstrom of hate and prejudice. Meanwhile, with help from a friend Finch’s children, Jem and Scout, set their sights on making contact with a reclusive neighbor.
The Great Gatsby: Nominated for two Academy Awards in 1974, this movie brings to life F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wrenching novel. Mia Farrow stars as Daisy Buchanan, the object of mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby’s (Robert Redford) affections. Beyond Gatsby’s grasp, Daisy is married to unfaithful Tom (Bruce Dern), making for a love triangle that ends, as they always seem to do, with broken hearts. The drama unfolds before narrator Nick Carraway’s (Sam Waterston) eyes.
Enjoy, and good luck with your scramble to finish the summer reading list!
